kigali — Send a cow last weekend distributed a total of 211 cows to livestock farmers in the districts of Rwamagana, Gisagara, Huye and Gasabo.
Send a cow is a British founded non governmental organisation working to alleviate poverty and malnutrition in Rwanda.
The event was implemented in partnership with the ministry of agriculture through Dairy Cattle Development Support Project [PADEBL] in line with the government’s policy of modern livestock farming.
"The cows were given to farmers with cattle feeds and who had managed to build modern kraals on the basis of one cow per poor family programme,” said Cosmus Ntare, the program extension manager.
The exercise follows a series of sensitization workshops providing practical training to livestock farmers in the respective districts on organic farming practices, environmental conservation, and crop and animal husbandry practices.
"We also offer free extension services to beneficiaries purposely to ensure good health of the animals and appropriate organic farming applications,” he said.
He added that every recipient family signs a contract to pass on the first female calf and skills learnt, to another family in need that in turn transfers a similar calf to another family in a rotating mode.
