KIGALI - Rwandan Police officers on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti were reported safe yesterday evening after a devastating earthquake that hit the Caribbean nation on Tuesday.

According to Police spokesman, Eric Kayiranga, most of the police officers had called their families and Headquarters yesterday to report they were safe. 

"We have 8 officers, some deployed in the capital and others in other parts of the country. Some of the officers have contacted their families while others have contacted the police directly.

"We have no news so far of any of our officers being affected by this tragedy, but as you know, communication in Port-au-Prince has been cut-off and it’s a bit difficult to communicate to them,” Kayiranga told The New Times.

The United Nations yesterday said that it had lost a significant number of its personnel in the calamity that beset the Caribbean nation. 

Officials fear more than 100,000 people could have died  in the quake Many were still trapped in tons of rubble brought down by the strongest earthquake to hit the  poor country in more than 200 years.
