KIREHE – Mpanga Fish Cooperative (KAMPA) based in Mpanga sector of Kirehe district, has helped its members to fight poverty. Members of the cooperative who talked to the New Times yesterday attributed their achievements to using modern methods of fishing.

"We use modern methods of fishing and nets that have enabled us to maximise profits. Every member of the cooperative is now happy. The sky is the limit,” Jean Claude Habimana one of the members said.

Anastase Hategikimana the Executive Secretary of Mpanga sector said due to their proximity to lakes, fishing has become a major income earner for most residents.  

"Fishing on lakes Rwampanga and Chyambwe (Nasho), is done with care, by the local people. They have been sensitised against using nets that catch immature fish,” he said.

"The fact that they get over 700 kilograms of fish daily, shows how much they can earn in a year on average,” he added.
