A spirited second-half display helped Rayon Sport salvage a point from yesterday’s action-packed tie against old rivals SC Kiyovu at Nyamirambo’s Regional Stadium.

Jean Marie Ntagwabira’s Kiyovu took an early lead when Nshuti Idesbald scored in the 9th minute after pouncing on a clever through pass from Jean Shyaka.

Kiyovu could have doubled their lead 15 minutes later but Shyaka’s long-range effort went inches wide of the Blues’ left goal post. For most parts of the first half, the game was played in the middle of the park but with little threat to either goal.

It was however a different story in the second half as both sides looked to get things moving but like the first half, it was Kiyovu, who ran the show earlier on.

But after Abdul Uwimana’s introduction, Rayon started to dominate play. The winger time and again linked up well with Aphrodis Hategekimana alias Kanombe, who played a free-role for the Blues.

In the 74th minute, Rayon’s top scorer Papy Gasana leveled matters from the spot kick after a nasty challenge on Kanombe by Kiyovu’s Fuad Ndayisenga.

It was Gasana’s fourth of the season and left him a goal adrift of league top scorers Bokota Labama (APR) and Police’s Roger Tchouassi.

While Ntagwabira was disappointed not to win the contest, his opposite number Jean Baptist Kayiranga was contented with the way his side came back fighting in the second half.

"At worst, we deserved a point. I felt we were a lot better than Kiyovu in the second half and went agonizing close so many times,”

Peter Kagabo, who crossed over from Atraco in the off-season had two good chances but couldn’t convert them. Gasana also had two wasted headers.

The score line means that Rayon stay in fourth place with 14 points while Kiyovu are now level on points (ten) with Electrogaz.

In Huye, Mukura made the most of their home advantage to secure a 2-1 win over Musanze. The victory moved Mukura into 8th spot while Musanze dropped one slot into 10th position.
