Flavia Sarafina and Isaac Munyakazi are now the new councillors of Kimironko and Mageragere sectors in Gasabo and Nyarugenge Districts respectively.

In the by-elections held on Saturday to fill the long vacant posts in the two districts, the duo beat their other contestants to win the seats that give them a clear chance to compete for the mayorship post in their respective districts.

Charles Munyaneza, the National Electoral Commission Executive Secretary confirmed the development. He could however, not reveal the number of voters.

Sarafina, 33, a former news host at Radio Rwanda has been the Public Relations and Communications officer in the ministry of Public Service and labour. She beat four other contestants who were vying for the same post.

She replaces Claudine Nyinawagaga who also doubled as Gasabo District Mayor, who resigned two months ago in what was termed by the District Advisory Council (DAC) as a"surprise.”

Munyakazi on the other hand replaces Origene Rutayisire who was the Nyarugenge District mayor. Rutayisire resigned in October last year, citing personal reasons.

Munyakazi holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Islamic University and Master’s degree holder in Business Administration from Kampala International University, both in Uganda.

He has been working as the Deputy Director in Charge of administration and Public Relations in the Office of Jumelage Rhenanie Palatinat.

The by-elections to replace the mayors are scheduled for January 13.
