Criminal cases reported to the Police dropped by more than six percent in the country last year.

This was announced in the annual police crime report released yesterday.

Close to 12,000 crimes were recorded by police in 2009 countrywide with cases of drug and alcohol abuse topping the list with 2,400 cases. Marijuana, illicit liquor and sniffing of petroleum products were the culprits.

Kigali City continues to lead the crime list with more than 30 percent of the cases followed by the Southern Province with 2,172.

The report ranked theft and assault as the second and third most committed crimes respectively. Theft has been on the increase in the last three months in the city with 80 cases reported during the period.

Police spokesperson Eric Kayiranga said that stronger measures to track down criminals and fight drug abuse are in the pipeline.

"We have laid strategies to curb the crime rate. But this can only be achieved if Rwandans can be part of it by reporting all those criminals because most of them are known by those they live with,” Kayiranga said.
