KIGALI - Ex-combatants have called upon the international community to do what it takes to disarm fighters still holed up in the jungles of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

They made the call during their meeting with nine visiting Dutch Members of Parliament at Mutobo Demobilization Centre, in Musanze district.

The former fighters are currently undergoing a demobilization and reintegration course at the camp.

Speaking on behalf of the former combatants, Corporal JMV Hakizimana narrated their ordeal in North Kivu. He said that the majority of those still in Congo lack clear information on the peaceful situation back home.

"The leaders of the fighting factions are based in different European countries. They champion the war through financial support and they are holding back our families in the bush. We request you to lend a hand in their arrest” pleaded Hakizimana.

Jean Sayinzoga, the Chairman of the Demobilization and Reintegration Commission, challenged countries harboring the ring leaders of rebel factions in Congo to arrest them and bring the culprits to justice.

He revealed that between 3,500 and 4,000 combatants are believed to be still fighting for FDLR.

According to the delegation head who also doubles as the Chairman of the Dutch Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Henk Jan Ormal, they were on a fact finding mission to see how far Rwanda has moved in unity and reconciliation.
