MUSANZE – The Intermediary Court of Musanze has granted bail to the former Mayor of Musanze district, Célestin Karabayinga and his former colleagues with whom he was jointly arrested over loss of public funds.

The case which was presided over by three judges ruled that Karabayinga be released on conditional bail. Among the conditions is that the former Mayor cannot move beyond the boundaries of the district without the court’s permission.

They were also required to present themselves to prosecution twice a month.

The president of the court Izabela Riziki said that bail is within the provisions of the law depending on the nature of the case.

The trio are facing cases of embezzlement of public funds, corruption and falsification of documents. They were arrested recently after information emerged that they had connived to swindle public funds amounting to Rwf 12 Million.

Speaking to The New Times, after his release Karabayinga hailed the decision and said that the public servants should always be accountable for the finances and other public resources entrusted to them.

During the previous hearing, court heard that Karabayinga wrote a letter to the Minister of Local Government saying that, he was ready to refund the Rwf 4 Million he was accused of embezzling.
