Two teenagers survive grenade explosion

NYAGATARE - Just two days after a grenade explosion killed two infants in Muhura sector, Gatsibo district; two other teenagers on Tuesday evening survived another grenade explosion in Mukama sector Nyagatare district. Police described identified the survivors as Innocent Habimana 15, and another 13-year old boy who was only identified as Maniriho.

NYAGATARE - Just two days after a grenade explosion killed two infants in Muhura sector, Gatsibo district; two other teenagers on Tuesday evening survived another grenade explosion in Mukama sector Nyagatare district.

Police described identified the survivors as Innocent Habimana 15, and another 13-year old boy who was only identified as Maniriho.

According to Police officials, the incident occurred when Habimana and Maniriho had gone to collect firewood.

‘They (children) went to collect firewood four kilometres away from their home when they came across two ‘tortoise like’ grenades and started playing with them,’ Supt. Edward Kayitare, Nyagatare district Police commander said in an interview. 

According to area residents, Children started playing with the grenades and later took off after one started releasing smoke. It exploded immediately and some fragments struck Maniriho .

Fortunately, nurses who attended to Maniriho at Nyagahita health centre said the boy was in good health.

‘We have treated him and he is doing well. The damage was not so big…he will be fine soon,’ one of the nurses at the health centre told the New Times.

According to police sources, another explosive devise discovered near the place and was taken to Nyagatare Police post together with the unexploded grenade.
