Gicumbi police recover tones of stolen rice

GICUMBI – Police in Gicumbi District on Monday morning recovered 18 tones of rice looted from an accident scene in Kigoma village, about 40 Km along Kigali- Gatuna highway. According to security sources at Byumba Police Station, the accident occurred when a Kenyan registered transit goods truck KBH 820J, carrying 50 tones of rice got involved in an accident.

GICUMBI – Police in Gicumbi District on Monday morning recovered 18 tones of rice looted from an accident scene in Kigoma village, about 40 Km along Kigali- Gatuna highway. 

According to security sources at Byumba Police Station, the accident occurred when a Kenyan registered transit goods truck KBH 820J, carrying 50 tones of rice got involved in an accident.

The consignment of rice belonging to a Rwandan businessman, whose names were not readily available at press time, was being transported from Nairobi to Kigali, via Gatuna Border.

"The Police immediately mounted a security crackdown with the help of area local leaders and managed to recover 18 tones of rice, hidden in the residents’ houses,” a police source said.

Eye witnesses at the accident scene only identified as Mwiseneza said the stolen rice was being sold at Rwf 300 per kg, half the market price of rice.

The recovered rice consignment was handed over to Rwanda Revenue Authority, in the presence of the owner.
Police said no one was injured during the accident.
