The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. James Kabarebe, has been invited by the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for a meeting to evaluate the recently concluded United Nations backed military campaign dubbed "Operation Kimia II” against the FDLR rebels in the volatile Eastern DRC.
In a meeting scheduled for January 19 – 20 in the Congolese town of Matadi, Gen. Kabarebe will be accompanied by the Chief of Military Intelligence (J2) Brig. Gen. Jack Musemakweli and Security Advisor, Brig Gen. Jerome Ngendahimana.
"They (DRC) wrote inviting the CDS and the meeting will essentially be an evaluation of Kimia II,” Army and Defense Spokesperson, Maj. Jill Rutaremara, told The New Times.
"They might also discuss the general security situation in the east of the country. They will carry out an evaluation, and I am sure they will also look at the way forward.”
The FDLR group consists of remnants of the former Rwandan army (ex-Far) and Interahamwe militia who masterminded the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and later fled into eastern DRC.
This comes just days after the Congolese army Sunday pledged to come down hard on what is left of the FDLR, by beginning a new operation dubbed "Operation Amani Leo” (Peace Today).
