Once upon a time there was a boy called Lakayana who lived in a far away village with his mother. One day Lakayana found a yam near his house and he took it home and gave it to his mother.
His mother said, "I will cook this yam for my son.”
She put it in a pot then on fire. It smelt very good and she ate it.
When Lakayana came home he was very surprised because he could not see or smell his yam.
"I am very sorry,” said his mother "I have eaten it.”
She gave him a beautiful water pot instead of the yam. Lakayana was very pleased with the pot.
He went outside and saw three girls near the river. They wanted to fetch water but they did not have a pot.
Lakayana gave them the pot but one girl broke the pot.
Lakayana found out and was unhappy, so he started singing, "Give me my pot, the pot which my mother gave me. My mother who ate my yam, the yam which I found near my house.”
The girls gave him a knife instead of a pot and he went away.
Soon after he found some young men who wanted to cut meat but had no knife. Lakayana gave them the knife but the men broke it.
Lakayana found out and again started singing, "Give me my knife which the three young girls gave me, the girls broke the pot, the beautiful pot which my mother gave me. My mother who ate my yam, the yam which I found near my house;”
The young men gave Lakayana an axe instead of the knife. He was happy to own an axe, so he went back home pleased that he had gotten an axe from a yam.
He used the axe to do repair the fence and make chairs and tables from wood. Lakayana did so many things around the house with his axe.
