Musanze-over 80 former street children in Ruhengeri town have completed a two-month rehabilitation training to prepare them return to the formal school system.

The elementary course was organized by a local NGO - Poverty Reduction Education and Family Empowerment in Rwanda (PREFER).

According to Cathy Emerson, the Director of PREFER, most of the children numbering are orphans who lack accommodation and parental care while others have families where they can stay but had decided to live on streets because of family neglect.

The NGO  pledged to send back all the rehabilitated children to school and buy them necessary scholastic materials and uniforms.

Domina Mukampunga, the officer in charge of social affairs in the Muhoza sector said that some children end up on streets because of lack of parental care.

This, she mainly attributed to problems related to polygamous families.
