KIGALI - Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) yesterday donated Rwf 9 million towards the One Dollar Campaign, an initiative aimed at raising money to build accommodation facilities for orphans of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The campaign which began early last year by the Rwandan Diaspora is aimed at getting housing for 600 orphans.

"BPR management and staff felt it imperative to support this campaign, and I hereby call upon every person of good will to get involved so that these houses get built,” Dieudonne Murekezi, deputy CEO of BPR said.

The Director of the Diaspora General Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Robert Masozera commended the bank for its generosity.

Jean Paul Kabera, the national coordinator of Student Survivors’ Association (AERG) said there was still a long way to go considering that only 600 out of 4,000 needy orphans will benefit from this project.

He rallied support for the project urging the public to constantly follow up on the progress of the construction exercise.

The coordination exercise of the project was recently handed over to AERG by the Rwanda Diaspora Global Network.

In a related development, Murekezi revealed that BPR clients of Bugesera branch had already collected Rwf 3,872,285 for the campaign and that it has already been remitted on the campaign’s account.

Seven blocks will be constructed to accommodate the 600 orphans and the complex will be built at Kagugu, Gasabo district.
