NYAGATARE - Eight Burundian citizens were last week arrested in a security swoop held in Nyagatare district.
Sources at Nyagatare Police Post said that those arrested were residents of Muyinga and Kirundo Provinces in neighbouring Burundi.

"The eight persons were arrested without travel documents but one of them was released,” said the source.

The suspects admitted to entering rwanda illegally.
"We were just told that there are better living conditions in Nyagatare district and we decided to cross over. We passed via waterways through Bugesera district and finally to Nyagatare,” Dismas Macumi, one of the suspects who left his wife and three children in Kirundo province said.

Police said the arrest of the illegal immigrants were part of the intensified security measures especially during the festive season.
