Rwanda boxing federation (RABA) Secretary General, Eugene Ndashyikirwa has confirmed that the 2010 calendar will begin on January 15 with the National Open championship.
The tournament had initially been scheduled for last month but was postponed after the federation failed to draw sponsorship.
"We have finally secured sponsorship from the CNLS (the national commission for the fight against AIDS) and the ministry of Sports and Culture has also pledged support,” said Ndashyikirwa yesterday.
He however, could not give details of the sponsorship package, saying it’s early to reveal it to the public.
The event is slated to attract the five active local boxing clubs. Already the clubs; ETM, Kimisagara, Remera, Musanze, and Inkuba have stepped up training in preparation for the event.
According to the national technical director, Gashugi Kananura, who also doubles as the national team coach, the federation will use the tournament to select a new national team.
