Scarcity of fish has triggered a general price increase in Kigali City to Frw1,400 Frw1,200 per kilogramme,  a month ago.

Most dealers attribute the scarcity to dwindling fish catches in the regional water bodies this season.

A mini survey carried out in major markets in the city by The New Times found most deep freezers empty.

Fish retailers, who used to be busy were now in groups wondering what the future holds without supplies as customers kept flocking the fish stalls and kiosks.

At Kimironko market, a consumer was heard complaining: "I have come here twice this week looking for fish but I can’t find any.”

Fish retailers warn that the prices may hike further as the country largely depends on fish supply from Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi.
