NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE—The gorilla organization this week marked ten years of its existence with a call on communities neighboring parks, to prevent gorilla’s extinction.

The cerebrations dubbed ‘community conservation’ held in Nyange sector, attracted executive secretaries of all the sectors bordering Volcano National Park, a delegation of The Gorilla Organization from United Kingdom and community residents.

Emmanuel Bugingo, the Rwanda program manager of The Gorilla Organization said that their social -economic study, revealed that local communities should be directly involved in preserving mountain Gorillas.

He called for more support and awareness campaign among communities neighboring protected areas, on their role in conserving primates.

Sector Executive Secretary, Peragia Mukanyandwi, noted that educating park neighbours on the value of conservation would go a long way in preserving Gorillas.

According to Bugingo, The Gorilla Organization carries out sensitization, supports environmental clubs, provides sustainable agricultural techniques and promotes environmental conservation policies like making energy-saving cook stoves.

A rain-water system of 30 cubic meters provided to residents by the organization was also inaugurated at kagano cell.

During the same event, residents exhibited traditional art pieces and crafts which they make and sell to the organization.
