MUSANZE - The National Public Prosecutions Authority has began investigations into the case of the District Mayor of Musanze, Celestin Karabayinga, who allegedly embezzled up to Rwf12 million. 

Karabayinga is detained together with  the former Executive Secretary of the district, Oswald Habiyaremye, and Valens Nkurunziza, in charge of culture and sports. 

According to the prosecution spokesperson, Augustin Nkusi, the prosecutors in Musanze court had started interrogating the suspects and that they would appear before court within seven days. 

Sources revealed that when the information was obtained that the money was channelled to the personal account of the Mayor, an investigation was immediately launched to establish how the funds were spent.  

The Governor of the Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, said that he had received a forged report indicating the expenditure of the money. 

He added that that the trio who signed documents proving its expenditure did not explain how government funds could be channeled through a personal bank account.

Karabayinga’s case adds to the growing number of district mayors arrested, as government escalates the fight against corruption.

He has been the vice president of Rwanda Association of Local Government Authorities-RALGA.
