NO SERIOUS CRIMES: Police Spokesperson Eric Kayiranga

KIGALI - Apart from two smoke grenade explosions in Huye district, there were no serious crimes during the entire Christmas holiday, according to police reports.

"This year’s Christmas was very secure. We have not registered any serious crimes and injuries.

The public was wonderful and we appreciate them for that,” said Eric Kayiranga Police spokesperson told Sunday Times in telephone interview.

He said there was no serious crime reported in Kigali on the Christmas night.

"Kigali is secure, the general mood right from 24th has been peaceful, and this has been due to good cooperation from the public.”

"We increased (police) deployment and this was to ensure timely intervention in case of any impending danger or crime and we are glad it paid off,” he added.

Seventeen accidents were reported between Dec 24th and midday Dec 26th across the country with no deaths involved.

The causes of these accidents included heavy rains that punctuate this year’s Christmas holiday, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

"We have registered 17 road accidents so far, these are due to heavy rains and reckless driving and a few which are due to driving when someone is drunk,” said Kayiranga.

He called for continued public cooperation in fighting crimes and being vigilant in taking care of their property during this festive season.
