KARONGI - Effective January 2010, all teachers will receive a pay rise of 10 percent,  Dr Mathias Harebamungu, the State Minister in charge of primary and secondary education said.

In addition to the salary increment, a total of 4,500 new teachers will be recruited into primary schools while 5,700 will join secondary schools.

Harebamungu made the revelations while speaking to local leaders in the Western Province during a meeting aimed at assessing the progress of classroom construction for the 9-year basic education program in the region.

It emerged that most of the districts in Western province had attained less than 50 per cent of what was expected in as far as construction of classrooms was concerned.

Harebamungu demanded for explanations from Mayors whose districts had failed to meet the minimum targets within the set deadline f before Christmas.
