Marines basketball club, formerly funded by the Ministry of Defense is seeking Frw10 millions to be able to compete in the national league next season.

The Ministry of Defense stopped sponsoring the Gisenyi based club before the start of last season’s playoff, a decision which sent the team out of action.

However, with enough time left before the new season starts, the team’s head coach, Prosper Mihigo confirmed that they’re in talks with two private companies concerning sponsorship and he is hopeful the talks will bear fruits so that his team competes in the next league campaign.

"We are talking to two (unnamed) potential sponsors and we’ve already forwarded our proposals to both. I am hopeful, we will compete in the coming season,” Mihigo told Times Sport Tuesday.

Despite the club going inactive after the MoD halted its sponsorship,  core of the team is still intact. "We need Frw10m to compete in next year’s championship,” Mihigo noted.

According to the coach, the new sponsor(s), once in place, will take over the full management of the club and possibly change the name.

Marines stunned the basketball fraternity when they won the national league title in 2007 after beating CSK in the final.
