KAYONZA – A group of youth from the districts of Kirehe and Kayonza yesterday surprised residents of Kayonza town, when they stormed streets, displaying condoms and calling on people to use them as part of the wider efforts to curb the spread of HIV and aids.

John Rutagengwa a resident of Kayonza town said that there was a lot of sense in the messages the youth passed to the community.

"We were taken by surprise when we saw students waving condoms in the air, calling on people to protect themselves from HIV. This is good…if our children are getting at this level of awareness, then it is sending a positive signal the society at large,”

He added, "People are still shy when it comes to using condoms…I for instance can’t buy a condom in the public eye. So, unless we come to terms with reality, we shall remain exposed to the pandemic”.

The youth that comprised mainly those whose families are affected and infected with HIV, were ending a  three day seminar centered on fighting the disease.

The seminar was organized by Partners in Health (PIH) in conjunction an NGO known as ‘Face Aids’ a sister organization based in the US.
