RWAMAGANA – The Governor of Eastern Province Dr. Ephraim Kabaija has ordered the immediate closure of all unlicensed bars in the Province. He said this yesterday, while addressing the Provincial Security Council that was evaluating the over all status of security in the province, as the year ends. Kabaija ordered the closure after realizing that they were a security threat in the region.

"In any case bars like other businesses must operate with a license. It is the license that scrutinizes whether the owner has fulfilled the required standards. Go and close all unlicensed bars that pose danger to our future generation,” he said.

The Regional Police Commander (RPC) Eastern Province, Chief Superintendent Gilbert Gumira, said most of the crimes are interrelated with the level of drinking in the region.

The RPC added that the four top crimes that include abuse of drugs and drinking illicit alcohol known as Kanyanga, in turn is attributed  to  many other crimes committed in the province.

"Let us combat drug abuse and Kanyaga drinking with all our might and we shall end most of these crimes,” he said.

The meeting at the same time called upon all security stakeholders to be more vigilant during this festive period.
