Golfer Innocent Rutamu was on Saturday, November 26, crowned the champion of the 2022 PMC Golf championship that reached its climax over the weekend.
Held at Kigali Golf Resort and Villas, the annual golf competition is organized by the PMC management team. The league runs for more than three months pitting golfers both in singles and group formats.
Rutamu won the championship in singles after beating Kigali Golf Club Captain Andrew Kulaigye in the final.
Kulaigye’s victory professional golfer Jacques Gatera in the semi-final as he showed hunger for silverware. However, Rutamu wasn’t ready to surrender the trophy either, beating him in the final to win the championship he has been hunting for over the recent years.
To reach the summit, Rutamu had to go through a difficult journey of beating the PMC Chief Executive Officer Eugene Mulengheka, upcoming amateur golfer Rabin Bista, reigning Champion James Muigai and Kigali Golf Club President, Marcel Byusa, who is a feared solid handicap four.
Rutamu becomes the latest champion of the PMC golf championship joining previous winners Kelly Doran in 2016, Kennedy Mirichu in 2017, Bheki Mthembu in 2018, Arthur Mugunga in 2019, James Muigai in 2021. There was no league in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The veteran was also victorious in the group format as he and his compatriot Emmanuel Byamungu won in the Gruesome category while Larson and Gabriel in the greensome format.
Andrew Kulaigye and Captain Mureithi were champions in Scramble, Karan Singh and Remy came out on top in Shambles as Francois Rugomboka alias Chesco and Anita won the 4BBB format while Darran and Patti won the Foursomes category.
PMC has been growing in popularity due to its playing formats where golfers meet other people they might not have had the opportunity to meet on the golf course.
"Golfers learn different cultures throughout the league", says Antony Olwit, a member of the league organising team.
