Rwanda Athletics Federation president has asked athletes to improve their time records as well as break the existing records.

Jean Paul Munyandamutsa said this at the conclusion of the second edition of the Rendezvous National championship at Amahoro stadium.

"We have concluded the most prestigious event on our schedule. It has been wonderful, but there has been no new records made. But at least there has been a slight improvement of the previous performances,” said Munyandamutsa.

Organizers of the two-day annual event had staked Frw100, 000 for every record broken but the money was returned to the coffers as no new record was set.

The Ministry of Education team retained their title after collecting 951 points, a double rise from the previous 381 points. Mineduc won 23 gold medals, 33 silver and 18 bronze.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) were the first runner up after recording 346 points. The military side won 18 gold, 8 silver and 23 bronze. MoD declined by five points from last year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affaires competing under the Police team came third after recording a total of 200 points. They won one gold medal, one silver and one bronze. 
Ministry of Local Government (Minaloc) emerged fourth on 166 despite not winning any medal.

The day’s attention was focused on Dieudonne Disi, who won the men’s 10.000m after clocking 29:52:76. However, he could not break the eight year 28:52 national record he had earlier targeted.

Disi also won silver in the 5,000m in 14:23:06, a race won by Police’s Sylvain Rukundo who clocked 14:22:52. His MoD Eric Sebahire won a bronze in 14:23:56.

It was a sweet revenge for Rukundo who had earlier in the day finished 40 seconds behind Disi in 10,000m.

MoD’s Claudette Mukasandi dominated the girl’s 5000 and 10.000m races. She won the 5000 in 16:56:87m and 10.000m in a time of 35:25:89. Last year’s 10.000m gold medalist Epiphanie Nyirabarame finished second in 36:30:89.

The boys sprint (100m) contest saw tight races between former champion Islam Mulinda and his closest rival Said Hamis Ndayisaba but both fell short of the gold medal.

Minedef’s Emmanuel Havugimana, rank outside before race won the contest in 10:86. Mineduc’s Frank Minani was second in 11:26.
