Tourism on L. Kivu boosted with $485,000 cruise boat

RUBAVU - The Rwanda Development Board has inaugurated a brand new cruise boat that will operate in Lake Kivu. A high tech 20 sitter boat, built by Italian company, FB designs, cost RDB $485,000. It will offer tourists four cruise options ranging from 2-4 hours.  “We are so exited about the boat. This marks the launch of marine tourism and we have decided to name the boat UMUNEZERO literary meaning joy,” Rosette Chantal Rugamba RDB deputy CEO in charge of tourism and conservation said.

A boost to marine tourism

RUBAVU - The Rwanda Development Board has inaugurated a brand new cruise boat that will operate in Lake Kivu.

A high tech 20 sitter boat, built by Italian company, FB designs, cost RDB $485,000.

It will offer tourists four cruise options ranging from 2-4 hours.

"We are so exited about the boat. This marks the launch of marine tourism and we have decided to name the boat UMUNEZERO literary meaning joy,” Rosette Chantal Rugamba RDB deputy CEO in charge of tourism and conservation said.

At the start, a two hour ride will go for Rwf 6000. A ride to Rusizi will cost Rwf 38,000 with soft drinks, guide and music.

According to Rugamba, tourism has become Rwanda’s number one foreign exchange earner ahead of Tea, Coffee and other exports

With the new boat, Tourists will be able to visit Napoleon, Amahoro and Nkombo islands as well as fishing villages, rural coffee washing stations and Nyamyumba Hot springs.

The tourism department has also opened a tourist information office in Rubavu that will help in making reservations and getting mountain gorilla tracking visas without going to the headquarters.
