Holders of old driving licenses have only two months to get new electronic driving licenses, the cabinet has directed.
In a cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on Wednesday, Internal Security Minister Musa Fazil Halerimana said that the directive was adopted to enable conclusion of the ongoing distribution of national identity cards.
During the meeting, Local Government Minister James Musoni also informed cabinet that the exercise of distributing the identity cards will conclude before end of this year.
In an interview yesterday, Musoni attributed the delays in the distribution of the cards to several conditions that had been attached to people who applied for them.
"It was held back by requirements like applicants having made contributions to the Umurenge Sacco as well as having subscribed to the Mutuelle de Sante health insurance,” Musoni said.
"But I have directed that those conditions be removed and I am confident that before end of this month all applicants will have got their cards,” Musoni said.
The minister added that the exercise was also delayed by the duration in which the cards were distributed, adding that the exercise would only be conducted once a week.
