KARONGI – Residents of Karongi district have expressed concern about the delayed opening of the district’s new telecentre located in Bwishyura sector, months after the building was completed.

The residents concerns gained momentum following the closure of the Private Sector Federation (PSF) regional office, two months ago. PSF was the only alternative ICT provider in the area.

"It is very frustrating. Accessing information has become a nightmare in this part of the country,” Marie Ishimwe, a university student living in Karongi said.

When contacted, Bernard Kayumba, the district mayor said the telecentre would start operating soon and the reason for the delay was the district’s push for a quality telecenter.

"People should not worry,” Kayumba said. "We are keen to the have it commence operations by early next year.”
