Three primary schools in Kigali city are the beneficiaries from the inaugural Macmillan Open Golf tournament that climaxed last Sunday.

Kigali Junior, Gisozi and Muhima primary schools were the lucky winners after a draw open to over 15 schools in Kigali and conducted by Rwanda’s premier golfers. Macmillan stated that the three schools will enjoy special prizes ranging from text books, computers and other scholastic materials from the company’s range of products.

Kigali Junior and Gisozi primary schools were rewarded with a computer and ten dictionaries respectively while the textbook manufacturers promised to stock Muhima primary school’s library for the next three years.

In his closing remarks on Sunday, Macmillan’s managing director Arthur Barigye said that the company was proud to be associated with golf and children.

"We want to boost the game of golf as well as promote the education of children through availing them with a variety of reading material,” Barigye stated.

Before adding, "Kigali has been the starting point but in future, we intend to reach out to schools from different parts of the country.”

Steven Katwiremu carded 154 gross to emerge as the overall winner at the two-day event that was staged at Kigali Golf Club and attracted over 76 golfers.

It was his second major silverware this year after the Mützig Open back in September.

Other notable winners at the competition included Francois Rubangura, Thierry Ntaganda, Cesco Francois, Olivier Munyaneza and Christine Lebeau.
