NYAMASHEKE - A Gacaca court in Shangi sector, Nyamasheke District, on Tuesday sentenced three men to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of Genocide.
The three; Jean Damascene Maniriho, Charles Muhigura, and Christopher Sebahungu, are all residents of Shangi sector

The same court also handed David Kamana, and Eloi Ndikumana 30-year jail terms while Jean Claude Bizimana and Gilbert Ndimubanzi received 19.

Reading the verdicts, court president, Robert Murenzi, said the evidence presented during the trial proved beyond any doubt that the men had actively participated in the Genocide in Shangi and other sectors in Nyamasheke.

The court added that those sentenced to life had been among the planners of the Genocide in the former Cyangugu prefecture.

It heard that the accused manned various roadblocks where many Tutsi were caught and killed. They also distributed machetes to Interahamwe militia.

They also participated in killing thousands of Tutsis who had sought refuge at Shangi Catholic Church
Shortly after reading the verdict, the convicts were whisked off in a police Toyota land-cruiser pick-up to Cyangugu Central prison in Rusizi district amid tight security.
