MUHANGA – Campaigns for the election of two councilors for Nyamabuye and Cyeza sector in Muhanga district heat up on final leg. 

The campaigns have attracted five candidates, according to Jean de Dieu Rutatika, the provincial electoral commissioner.

The December 19 election is meant to fill two vacant posts following the resignation of Cyeza councilor Martin Rwisumbula and the untimely death of the former Muhanga district vice Mayor Abedi Ruzigana Kizito, who died in a motor accident on October 18.

"Residents will elect one candidate in each of the sectors on December 19. The successful candidates will join the district committee after which one councilor will be elected the new vice mayor in charge of economic affairs on December 23,” Rutatika said.

The late Kizito also represented Nyamabuye on the council.
The campaigns officially close today, and all the candidates were yesterday involved in last minute campaigns.

Hard work and improved service delivery formed the highlight of the campaign manifestos.

Residents’ opinions indicate that the successful contestant will face an uphill task of filling the leadership gap left by late Kizito.

"Abedi was known for his peaceful efforts to bridge the gap between leaders and residents and was committed to the development of residents. Therefore, whoever is chosen will have a challenge ahead,” one resident said.
