GATSIBO – Six of the seven rebel suspects who had recently been detained at Gatsibo police station were released last Wednesday after a week in custody.

Police reportedly released the suspects after early investigations found no implicating evidence to prosecute the group.

The suspects, Jean du Die Nsabimana, Innocent Twagirimana, Gilbert Ndagijimana, local defense personnel, Jean Claude Habumugabo, a demobilized soldier, Benedict Ndego, and Katabirora all residents of Rwimbogo sector had been arrested in connection with enlisting to join FDRL rebel activities in the democratic republic of Congo.

One of the suspects, Festin Ndekezi, a Congolese national is still being held pending further police investigations.

"It’s true they were released and right now they are free men”. But one of the suspects Festin Ndekezi, a Congolese national who reportedly mobilized them for recruitment into unknown rebel groups is still being held to help in further investigations,” John Muvara, executive secretary of Rwimbogo sector said.

Muvara said the Congolese national still detained is accused of mobilizing residents into rebel activities.

Security sources said that though Ndekezi admitted that he was recruiting for general Nkunda’s forces, he had given them conflicting reasons for his motive of mobilizing the group.

Muvara said that following the group’s release, local authorities organized a general meeting with residents in which they warned them against subversive activities against the government.
