At least 1,500 Science and Mathematics teachers on Wednesday completed training that will enable them use a student-centred learning environment while teaching.
The 10-day seminar was organised by the Ministry of Education and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with the aim of strengthening sciences in Rwandan Secondary Schools.

According to Ildephonse Habiyambere, a national trainer with the Ministry of Education, the training was attended by both A’ level and O’ level teachers of both subjects.

Habiyambere said that the training was conducted at different centres in the country but hastened to add that all teachers acquired the same skills.

"Although there are still challenges of lack of laboratory equipments and laboratories in some schools, we are happy to have received new skills of using the environment as source of teaching sciences” said one of the participants.

The training is being conducted under the joint MINEDUC-JICA project called Strengthening Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE).

The programme which is in its second year, targets to train more than 2,000 teachers by April next year.
