The Rwanda Amateur Boxing Association (Raba) has called for a crisis meeting after failing to secure sponsors for this year’s national championship which was due to start today at Amahoro indoor stadium.

The Raba technical director, Gashugi Kananura said yesterday that the championship was due to start today but failure to get sponsorship has forced them to call it off and call  for what described as a crisis meeting, which would be attended by presidents of the various boxing clubs in the country.

"The meeting would aim at finding possible solutions to this financial constraint that has hit the preparation of the national championship.

"We can’t hold such a championship when we don’t have even water for the participating boxers,” Gashugi explained.

However, the boxing federation technical director who also doubles as the national team coach is optimistic that the national championship would go ahead on Wednesday to Friday, November 28 to 30.

"On the technical part, I’m prepared and everything is fine, only waiting for the kick off.

I just hope that the outcomes of the meeting will be positive so as to have a successful championship getting underway on Wednesday,” Gashugi added.

The event had initially been scheduled to run from November 8-12 but it was postponed due to an international gossip crusade by Uganda’s renowned Crusader Pastor Robert Kayanja.

However, only three clubs;  Remera, Inkuba and No Limit (Pan Africa boxing club) had confirmed participation in this year’s national championships by press time yesterday.

Initially the championship was planned to cost Frw3 millions but the mentioned fee was expected to be got from several sponsors, however, until now, no single sponsor has injected even a single coin into the championship.
