GICUMBI – Transparency Rwanda’s Executive Secretary Appollinaire Mupiganyi has urged district and sector leaders to spearhead the fight against corruption in the district.

Mupiganyi’s comments were contained in a letter written to the Gicumbi district Mayor Bonane Nyangezi.

"Corruption is an evil that cripples the economy, which is why collective responsibility at all levels is needed to eradicate it,” reads the letter in part.

"In realising its objectives, Transparency Rwanda in collaboration with the School of Finance and Banking (SFB) anti-corruption club has launched countrywide anti-corruption campaign in 20 districts.”

The comments were part of the activities to mark anti-corruption week during which sensitisation campaigns to eradicate all forms of corruption were conducted.

Speaking to The New Times at Gicumbi district, a student of SFB Anti-corruption Club Emmanuel Karangwa, said their major focus will be to discourage the diversion of fertilisers meant to increase agriculture production in villages.

"Agriculture being the backbone of Rwanda’s economy needs to be protected against greedy leaders, who divert fertilisers and selected seeds meant to increase production,” he said.

"SFB Anti-corruption Club members have been dispatched to four districts in each province to sensitise leaders and local residents on the dangers of corruption.”
