NYANZA – Provincial Governor, Fidele Ndayisaba has backed the Huye district’s plan to modernise down town Huye.

Speaking during a provincial coordination meeting on Tuesday, Ndayisaba urged district authorities to engage landlords in a dialogue aimed at setting a timeframe for the construction of modern structures in the town.

"We support the bold move taken by the district, we encourage you to work closely with property owners and work on a gradual phasing out of old structures in the town,” he said.

Last month, authorities of Ngoma Sector labelled all commercial houses in the town perceived to be substandard and up for demolition, a move that sent shockwaves amongst residents.

Youth Minister Protais Mitali, speaking during the same meeting on Tuesday seconded the move.

"The hotels are in a sorry state and an eyesore to visitors,” Mitali said. "We should not keep such dilapidated structures in the name of safeguarding history.”

MP Henriette Sebera, said that people in need of historical information about the town can find it in the museum.
"A section on the history of the town can be opened up in the museum,” she said.

The strong stance taken by district authorities is already paying off, fuel stations in the town have been given a facelift and Rwf1.45billion modern shopping complex is under construction in the usually busy commercial section of the town.
