RUSIZI — Two people died on spot while 43 others sustained serious injuries when a tipper lorry they were traveling in over turned last weekend near Sonafruit factory.

The dead were identified as Charles Muvunyi 34, and Damascene Kalisa 29, both residents of Gishoma cell in Gashonga sector.

Police rushed the injured victims of the late evening accident to Gihundwe Hospital in Kamembe. Majority of the casualties whose names were not easily identified by press time had lost their legs, arms and eyes.

All the victims were reportedly workers of Chinese road and bridge construction company on board their company truck.

The cause of the accident was not yet established but one of the victims admitted at the Hospital, Jean Claude Muganga who was not in a critical condition blamed the accident on reckless driving.

 "For me I put all the blame on the errant driver because of over speeding under the influence of alcohol,” he alleged.
According to eye-witnesses, the tragedy occurred at around 4:50 pm when the vehicle lost control hitting a tree.

 "I saw the lorry sliding off the road and it stopped after colliding with a tree and overturned instantly,” said Jean Kagabo.
