Karongi — District planted about 8000 trees during the conservation week marked under the theme ‘less conserve the environment.

During the planting exercise that largely covered the banks of Lake Kivu area residents were urged to plant trees along the Nyamishaba road side.

The exercise was wound up in Nyarusazi last Saturday during communal work- Umuganda where 407 trees were planted up- hill aimed at preventing soil erosion in an area which is prone to landslides during heavy rains.

"Land is the readily available wealth that any Rwandan can get access to, if used properly we are bound to create wealth,” minister of state for Aids and other infectious diseases Innocent Nyaruhirira said.

Safari Bagina, the sector executive secretary urged residents to plant more trees to conserve land fertility as well as acting as wind breakers.

 He also noted that trees were a source of medicine and wealth for they help in creating rainfall to facilitate crop growing.
