A Female Member of Parliament representing Kigali City, Yvonne Uwayisenga, has warned women against searching for superiority in the name of gender equality.

Uwayisenga, a former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, was addressing women from different sectors in Kigali City camping in Kanombe for a three-week solidarity camp under the Itorero framework.

"This regime has catered for women emancipation and we have laws that protect women unlike previous regimes, but it does not give women the right to disrespect their husbands,” Uwayisenga told hundreds of women yesterday.

Uwayisenga called upon women to understand laws that protect them, and how they can politely fight for their rights to curb all sorts of violence that largely affect women and children.

"Don’t be like some of those I have heard that assaulted their husbands on women’s day saying it is gender equality. That a man went to your family and paid the bride price, he deserves respect”.

According to Leonard Niyonzima Rigawezi, the coordinator of the solidarity camp, women will be discussing all national values that can improve the Rwandan society.

Rigawezi said that women will be reminded of the neglected and forgotten cultural values that can strengthen Rwandan families.
