The United Nations (UN) has promised to avail US$ 800,000 (Frw456million) to enable different ministries make reports on the implementation of different international conventions that Rwanda has ratified.

Omar Kane, a UN Human Rights Advisor said yesterday during a workshop at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that $50,000 has already been released.

"There is need to build on efforts towards better streamlined reporting and that is why the UN has launched a project to support treaty reporting,” Kane said during the workshop that attracted several Permanent Secretaries from different ministries.

The two-day sensitization workshop, the first of its kind, aims at raising awareness among government officials on the political importance of treaty reporting.

According to Eugene Munyakayanza, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the workshop, will sharpen the understanding of reporting and facilitate participants prepare state reports on relevant UN treaty monitoring bodies as required by the relevant UN human rights conventions.

"This workshop reflects a step forward in entrenching the activities of treaty reporting. Your presence indicates the government’s commitment to promote human rights through implementation of activities related to human rights monitoring and reporting,” Munyakayanza said.

Military Spokesperson Major Jill Rutaremara, one of the government officials present at the workshop, praised the event saying this will make information gathering a much easier task.
