ELECTIONS for the new executive committee of the National Olympic body (RNOC) were Tuesday given the green light by top officials from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca).

The elections, initially scheduled for November 30 were moved to December 5 on the request of Jerome Poivey (IOC) and Joao da Costa Aegre (Anoca), who wanted a detailed report on the reasons that led to the disbandment of the former executive committee which was led by Ignace Beraho.

After an exhaustive meeting with the RNOC general assembly, the two officials seconded the elections to be held this Saturday. They also concurred with the decision to disband the previous committee led by Ignace Beraho.

Aimable Bayingana, the body’s interim committee president ruled out a possibility of Rwanda being banned by IOC as earlier feared.

"They are fully aware of the reasons that led to the disbandment of the previous committee and assured us that there was nothing to worry about,” he said.

Till date, former Sports Minister Robert Bayigamba and Rwanda Tennis federation (RTF) chief are vying for RNOC’s top seat (president).

Phophina Muhimpundu and Theogene Uwayo are in contention for the post of 1st vice president, while Elie Manirora (NPC-Rwanda), Jean Paul Munyandamutsa (Athletics) and David Mucyesha are contesting for the post of 2nd vice president.

Parfait Busabizwa and Alex Mbaraga are standing for the post of Secretary General while Thierry Rwabusaza (Cycling federation) and Alain Christian Sekuru are competing for the post of treasurer.

The elections, which will be overseen by the judiciary committee, will be held at Ferwafa head offices.
