As part of the continuous process of introducing the national smart card, two institutions have already agreed to integrate their data under one system.

The Coordinator of the National ID (NID) Project, Pascal Nyamurinda, said in an interview with The New Times that the proposed card would incorporate data of an individual’s driver’s license as well as that of travel documents. 

According to the official, , negotiations to share major applications from the Immigration and Emigration Directorate and those of the Traffic police have been going on since last month and both institutions have agreed to the proposal.

"Starting from December 9, we will do the systems integration where information such as driving license and passport details will be put on one chip – a smart card device. We are certain that six months from now, the first card will be distributed.

"Users will be able to access various services by the use of just one card. After the launch of this system we hope to carry out more consultations in a bid to add other services like RAMA, banking and social security among others,” Nyamurinda explained.

The Coordinator also noted that the new card will be easier to clarify anyone’s details once all services have been integrated.

A United Kingdom-based company has been contracted to execute the project and officials add that only citizens with electronic national identity cards will receive the new card.
