EASTERN PROVINCE

Gatsibo-All 14 sectors in Gatsibo are being cleaned and planted with trees and grass from side to side by the local people in Tuzamurane cooperative to help beautify the city.

The cooperative is an initiative made by the district together with the youth and demobilized soldiers who are lacking jobs.

Tuzamurane started in May of 2006 and today has 488 workers involved in cleaning Gatsibo.

Like many cooperatives in rural areas, Tuzamurane was created to provide work for the youth and those lacking employment in villages.

Mayor Vianney Murego said that, apart from keeping the district "clean and green,” it has also provided employment for the local people.

"Such work from the youth, the demobilized and local people will not only improve on hygienic conditions, but will also boost rural income,” Murego said on Thursday, while inspecting the work being done by the local people in Kabarore sector.

Director of Tuzamurane cooperative Alex Mutangana said they had a target to meet before the year’s end.

"Our plan is to plant one million trees allover the district by the end of 2007 and because we have support from the district, we are sure to meet the deadline” Mutangana said.

Tuzamurane also provides its members with services like wedding decorations, tents, plastic chairs on weddings and burial occasions.
