US’s film produce Darren Dean, is in the country to work with the ongoing shooting of ‘Kinyawanda, a film that focuses on how the Rwandan Muslim community conducted themselves during the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi.

In an interview, Dean told The New Times that it is his first time in Africa—and that he is so keen to promote the local film industry.

"I had heard a lot about Rwanda, and of course there was this natural sense from people because of what happened during the 1994 genocide,” Dean said, adding that, "But, I was amused that Rwanda is now peaceful, and is developing very fast.

Dean said that he was inspired to visit Rwanda by Alrick Brown, an American actor, and the director of ‘Kinyawanda’.

He further noted that he sees a great potential in the film, because it’s a new movie based on the Rwandan genocide, and it brings the element of unity and reconciliation among the Moslem community and among Rwandans.

Dean urged Rwandans, ministries and NGOs working in the country to support the local film industry.

According to Brown, one of the major challenges is the unpredictable weather. "Sometimes it’s rainy, yet we wish its sunny, or the other way round,” Brown said.

Meanwhile, the shooting of the movie is scheduled to end this week.
