RWAMAGANA - Two women suspected of selling banned local gin locally know as Kanyanga were last week arrested and detained at Rwamagana police station.

Saidat Niyigena and another woman were caught red-handed selling the alcohol in Muhazi village, Muhazi sector.

A prison warden attached to Nsinda prison who arrested the suspects said they tried to hide when he confronted them.  "They sell to casual laborers who drink the whole day,”  said the prison warden.

Rwamagana Mayor, Valence Ntezirembo, said they would trace the origin of the alcohol so that all those involved are apprehended.  The sale of such banned gin normally involves a long chain of accomplices, he said.

A recent police report indicates that 72% of the crimes committed in the province, are linked to drug and alcohol abuse.
