The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has honoured President Paul Kagame for his unprecedented support for the regional body.

Also honoured was Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Kenyan internationals Joe Kadenge and Peter Dawo.

The President is a long time sponsor of the Cecafa Club Championship while Raila, who is reported to be a regular personality at Kenyan local matches, is patron of 1987 Africa Cup Winners Cup champions Gor Mahia.

The honours were part of a sophisticated opening ceremony for the 33rd Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup that started in Nairobi yesterday.

President Kagame has been the sole sponsor of the regional club championships for the last six years. Sports and Culture minister Joseph Habineza received the award on behalf of the President.

Meanwhile, guest team Zambia beat host nation Kenya 2-0 in the opening fixture of the 33rd Cecafa senior Challenge Cup.

According to sources, the Chipolopolo boys dominated the encounter and now look clear favourites to run away with the trophy in this two-week tournament that has attracted 12 nations.

Zambia, winners in 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and quarterfinalists in Uganda last year scored both goals in the final two minutes of normal time.

China-based James Chamanga opened the scoring in the 88th minute before Sunzu Stopilla added the second two minutes later.

Rwanda’s Amavubi Stars kick off their campaign this afternoon against Somalia at Nyayo stadium. Eric Nshimiyiman’s youthful side arrived in Nairobi on Friday.
