GICUMBI – The Gicumbi Intermediary Court vice president, Felicien Nsegiyumva, has said the court’s performance has greatly improved over the last four years.

"The Court has managed to handle over 5000 cases since 2004, in addition to clearing a total of 2,562 cases which were pending before the judiciary reforms,” he said, adding that a case brought before them is handled in less than a month.

Nsengiyumva made the remarks on Thursday during a public presentation to evaluate their achievements.

He criticised some local mediators commonly called Abunzi, ‘for re- trying cases already disposed off by the court.’
"Abunzi mediation committee judges require extensive training to be acquainted with legal basics regarding the boundaries of their jurisdictions,” he said.

He also noted that operations at Kaniga Primary Court are currently being hampered due to lack of electricity.

The ceremony held at the court’s chambers attracted different dignitaries including district leaders, judges of primary courts, prosecutors, security officials, representatives of Private Sector Federation (PSF), religious leaders and residents.
