Why you need to eat foods rich in potassium

Potassium is a mineral salt (electrolyte) that is essential for maintaining the balance of pH levels in our body fluids. Potassium is a mineral salt (electrolyte) that is essential for maintaining the balance of pH levels in our body fluids.

It plays an important role in regulating our blood pressure, bone mass, nervous system, muscle function, and heart, kidney, and adrenal functions. Low levels of potassium can cause potassium deficiency and bring on a host of health problems.

People with diabetes and kidney problems commonly suffer from this mineral imbalance. Eating food such as gananas, oranges, avocado, strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes and cabbages can give the body the required potassium.

Symptoms of potassium deficiency include overall weakness constant fatigue, lapses in concentration difficulty with muscular coordination.

Potassium deficiency can also lead to high blood pressure problems, hypertension, strokes, and heart irregularities. It is always advisable to seek medical check-up if one experiences any of the symptoms.

Important to note is that an entirely carnivorous diet can be detrimental to one’s health, causing a rise in acid levels and depleting potassium levels.

A number of potassium supplements are also available on the market, but their consumption should be with a doctor’s recommendation.

Hyperkalemia is a condition where there is too much potassium in the blood. Usually this is due to an underlying medical condition such as a kidney disease or diabetes disease.

Doctors want to keep an eye on elevated potassium levels because very high levels can be damaging to the heart function.
