YOUTH in the country have been advised to embrace ways and means of attaining self reliance, instead of solely depending on their parents.

François Nkurunziza, the Executive secretary of Mayange sector, Bugesera district advised the youth to start planning their future early in life.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing youth who had gathered for civic education in Nyamata.

"You should start working hard while still young. This can be done both within the classroom and out side the school environment," he said. "When you do this with discipline, you will end over reliance on your parents, whose incomes as you know are limited.”

The youth were also cautioned against engaging in cross generation sex which exposes them to HIV infection and unplanned pregnancies.

Meanwhile in Huye district, the Executive Secretary of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC), Dr Jean Baptsite Habyarimana, said that civic education (itorero) is an informal educational programme designed to model youth into better citizens capable of driving the country into the  future.

"Through Itorero, we emphasise the Rwandan cultural values of a united people, a self respecting population, a people free from ethnic divisionism,” he said.

He also appealed to the youth  to guard against Genocide ideology.
